Conlangs

Introduction

Conlangs or constructed languages come in many forms. In the case of Omoha, I wanted them to be as naturalistic as I could develop them to be. They're always connected to their respective cultures, and don't exist in a vacuum.

Languages on Omoha usually stay within their respective humanoid genus. Intermingling between these languages is very rare, though exceptions do occur.

I've ordered my world's languages from largest language family to smallest, italic means they are not as developed.

Language families

Medan language family

A widespread macro-family encompassing the archipelago continent, Meda. As a diverse group there are quite a few scripts used, as well as phonological quirks. Scholars are still considering whether other languages might fall under this family.

Continental language family

THE human language family, present on the entirety of Loša. Despite its unity, the Earthkin have a long-standing history of war and conflict.

Talsekian sprachbund

The Talsekian sprachbund contains a large number of smaller language families with similar features, caused by a long history of contact between the tropical tribes and kingdoms.

Lotašian language family

Not much is known about the mysterious habitants of the new found land Lotaš. Spoken in alien environments of towering mushrooms and symbiotic life, besides the broad language branches there exists no information: other than the fact that this must be a gigantic language family.

Meso-Faunal language family

A very diverse language family located in the center of Samata, spoken by a large number of different Beastmen polities. Ranging from moist jungle kingdoms, to dry savannah tribes and mountain-dwelling communities.

Paleo-Wetreppian language family

One of the few Earthkin language families on Samata, spoken primarily in the harsh desert Wetrep as well as the lush river land in the South. Characterized by exotic sounds, such as lateral fricatives and many palatal consonants.

Protean language family

The Protean languages are spoken in the very south of Samata, on the plateaus and tepuis. As one of the few languages of the world with implosive consonants, they are a very unique language group and one of the few on Samata with a writing system.

Matapikian language family

One of the only two human language families on Samata, this one is spoken in the northern subcontinent Matapik, an arid mesa region. They are closely connected to the Wetreppian languages through the same writing system and political influence.

Sefai language family

The Sefai languages are endemic to the black islands of the Medan continent. It is a close-knit family with little to no outside influence, spoken by the people of warring clan-states.

Hadal language family

Only found in the deep trenches of west Meda, this loose language family is spoken by deep sea dwelling fish peoples. One descendant of this family has now developed on the surface though, after a long contact with the neighboring Milenians.

Isolates

These are languages found only once on Omoha who have seemingly no relation to the surrounding languages. So far there are only three known examples, though some propose WIP1 and WIP2 to belong to an Oceanic branch of Proto-Medan.
